UNIVERSITY OF GHANA DELEGATION VISITS JAPAN TO ADVANCE EDUCATIONAL AND SPORTS EXCHANGE PARTNERSHIPS

May 15-2026

As part of ongoing efforts by the Embassy of the Republic of Ghana in Tokyo to strengthen educational exchanges and create international opportunities for Ghanaian students, researchers, and athletes, the Embassy facilitated a strategic visit by a delegation from the University of Ghana Sports and Wellness Directorate to leading universities and sports institutions in Japan from 10th to 15th May 2026. The three-member delegation comprised Dr. Austin Wontepaga Luguterah, Director of Sports and Wellness; Prof. Jemima Akosua Anderson, Dean of the International Programmes Office; and Mr. Augustine Amissare, Senior Assistant Registrar at the Sports and Wellness Directorate. During the visit, the delegation held engagements with several key institutions, including the University of Tsukuba, Nippon Sport Science University, Waseda University, the Japan Sports Agency, the University Sports Association, and the Japan Association for University Athletics and Sport (UNIVAS). The engagements formed part of broader efforts to deepen Ghana–Japan cooperation in higher education, sports development, research collaboration, student and staff mobility, athlete development, and institutional capacity building. At the University of Tsukuba, discussions focused on sports science research, athlete development systems, talent identification, and opportunities for staff and student exchange programmes. The delegation also toured high-performance sports facilities designed to support elite athlete development. At Nippon Sport Science University, discussions explored collaboration in sports performance, coaching education, sports medicine, technical training, and professional development opportunities for sports administrators and technical personnel. The visit to Waseda University focused on university sports governance, academic collaboration, postgraduate supervision, faculty and student exchange programmes, conferences, seminars, and joint research initiatives aimed at promoting innovation and international learning opportunities. The delegation also met officials from the Japan Sports Agency, where discussions centered on Japan’s sports development policies, youth sports systems, athlete welfare, talent pathways, and potential technical cooperation with Ghanaian institutions. Further engagements with the University Sports Association and UNIVAS explored opportunities for collaboration in university sports governance, inter-university competitions, and balancing academic excellence with sports development among student-athletes. As part of efforts to strengthen long-term cooperation, the Director of Sports and Wellness extended an invitation to UNIVAS to participate in the University of Ghana’s international sporting engagements and competitions scheduled for next year. The initiative is expected to promote cultural exchange, international exposure, and stronger institutional partnerships between Ghana and Japan. The Embassy noted that the visit reflects Ghana’s commitment to promoting educational diplomacy and creating meaningful opportunities for Ghanaian students, researchers, athletes, and institutions through international collaboration. The Embassy further reaffirmed its commitment to supporting partnerships that advance education, research, innovation, youth empowerment, sports development, and people-to-people exchanges between Ghana and Japan. The delegation expressed appreciation to the Embassy of Ghana in Tokyo for its support, coordination, and facilitation throughout the visit, particularly acknowledging the contributions of Mr. Christopher E.K. Gaba, Minister- counssellor responsible for education and culture in ensuring successful engagements across Tokyo and other institutions visited.
